Principal finds creative way to raise funds for music program

Arts programs in public schools are always struggling for money for materials and activities. The principal of Idaho Falls High School had an idea for a unique fund-raising idea.

“I thought about the passion this band teacher, choir teacher and orchestra teacher we have here at Idaho Falls High School, and the passion that results in the kids just loving to perform and be in the classes,” principal Bob Devine said. “They have a great sound, and I thought why not share this with the community.”

So Devine contacted a local studio to record the choir, orchestra and band performing Christmas music and make a CD they could sell for $10.

“It’s a good Christmas gift.” choir president Olivia Beach said. “Just pop it under the tree. Give it to grandparents or anyone who likes Christmas music, because who doesn’t like Christmas music?”

“The harmony is tight. The dynamics are good,” tenor Aaron Simms said. “I think it’s all on Miss J (choir director Zola Jensen). “She pulls us together.”

“It’s a different experience to listen to all the music programs,” Jensen said. “They’re all very strong at Idaho Falls High School, and I feel like it’s a great way to show the public what we’re doing here.”

The Christmas CDs are available from choir, orchestra and band members and at the high school office.
