Interfaith rally focuses on understanding and respect

Well over 100 people gathered at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Idaho Falls to learn more about different faiths, and each other.

The interfaith rally was organized by Dr. Fahim Rahim, a kidney doctor and Muslim, who wants to “reclaim the narrative of true American spirit which is about freedom and mutual respect and not about fear, hatred, or divide,” said Rahim.

Several speakers from different faiths, non-faiths, and backgrounds discussed a bit about where they came from, and the importance of learning rather than assuming.

“We can’t help to do that unless we understand and are on the same page,” said the Rev. Ruth Marsh, the pastor for Trinity United Methodist Church. “This will be a safe place for people to ask respectful questions and hear respectful answers.”

Rahim said respecting people’s differences is a traditional part of the American spirit. “The first generation that came here, on the Mayflower, they wanted to escape persecution,” said Rahim. “I see that here, and I want that to continue and to grow.”

Many of the people who attended today’s meeting said they left with a greater understanding of other belief systems.

“It was a very heartfelt message of accepting others and opening your eyes to diversity and tolerance,” said David Barton. “I really liked it.”

“The biggest thing I learned was take the time to know someone,” said Alma Jam. “Don’t rely on the media or anyone else that could give you false information on people and who they really are.”
