Woman arrested for excessive DUI after smashing into patrol car

Idaho Falls Police arrested 26-year-old Kristi L. Burgess for aggravated assault and excessive driving under the influence of alcohol after she smashed into a patrol car early Tuesday morning.

Burgess of Idaho Falls was booked into the Bonneville County Jail.

According to police reports, officers responded to Chamberlain and Short around 1 a.m. for a woman passed out behind the wheel of a Dodge pickup truck.

Officers arrived and found the truck in the middle of the road, the engine running and the brake lightson. Officers walked up to the vehicle and the driver, identified as Burgess, was slumped over with her head against the vehicle window. The vehicle was still in “drive” and her foot was on the brake.

An officer parked his patrol car in front of the truck to keep it from rolling in case her foot came off the brake while still passed out.

Burgess’ vehicle doors were locked and officers tried for several minutes to wake her. When she finally woke up, she refused to open the door and attempted to get away. She drove her truck into and slightly up onto the front of the patrol vehicle, where an officer was sitting inside.

Before she could drive any farther, officers broke a vehicle window to remove Burgess from the vehicle and arrested her.
