Weston woman competes for spot in Extreme Huntress competition

Lindsay Christensen, 27, has been shooting arrows since she was a kid. Growing up hunting with her dad inspired her hunting passion and gave her some of her earliest memories.

“I’ve pretty much been hunting since before I could walk,” Christensen said. “In fact, one of my first words was dirt.”

She harvested her first deer at age 12. And since then, it’s been animal after animal.

“I’ve gotten a couple bears, some antelope, a moose, several mule deer, whitetail, lots of turkeys,” Christensen said. “I’ve went to Mexico and Texas and I was able to get a Texas dall sheep, four javelinas and a hog.”

All told, a total of 27 animals harvested. And 24 of those were with her weapon of choice: her bow.

Though Christensen does sometimes hunt with a rifle as well, the bow is her specialty.

Christensen has been doing competitive archery for years. But now her archery skills face a whole new challenge – the Extreme Huntress competition. After submitting an online essay and application, Christensen was selected as one of 20 semifinalists.

“I was actually really surprised when I got the email that said I was a semifinalist,” she said. “I just wasn’t sure I had done enough things or accomplished enough things so I was pretty excited.”

Now the public helps vote for the six finalists. Judges’ scores will count for 70 percent and public voting for 30 percent of the final score.

If Christensen makes the top six, she will head to Texas in July to compete on the Extreme Huntress show. The show is a series of 26 webisodes that will air in the fall. Judges will score the contestants on hunting ability and skills to determine the overall winner for the 2017 Extreme Huntress Award.

Christensen hopes by doing this competition, she can help be a good role model for women.

“Being a female, I feel like being able to harvest my own animals and being able to take care of them is a huge sense of accomplishment,” she said. “It makes me feel very self-sufficient.”

For now, Christensen will just keep aiming for her shot in the finals. She said she looks forward to whatever comes next.

“I’m up for a good challenge,” she said. “At the end of the day, if I haven’t challenged myself, then I didn’t do enough.”

Voting on the semifinalists goes until the end of May. To vote, go to the Extreme Huntress website.
