Lane Creek fire being allowed to burn near Thayne
Firefighters are working to contain the 1.5 acre Lane Creek fire about 10 miles north-northwest of Thayne, Wyoming. The Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center says the lightning caused fire has moderate to high potential to grow.
It is spreading by spotting through large downed fuels.
Because of its remote location, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest is allowing the fire to burn in an effort to increase the health of the fire.
Fire managers are considering a number of factors in choosing to manage, rather than fully suppress a fire. They believe that with cooler, moist weather predicted for the weekend, minimal growth of the fire is expected. The moist conditions still present in higher elevations will also limit fire activity in the near term.
Smoke from the Lane Creek fire will be visible in the area, but fire personnel from the Montpelier and Soda Springs Ranger Districts will be closely monitoring it.
