Fire training on house brings new opportunities

It was a burn and learn day Wednesday in Pocatello. The Pocatello Fire Department did live fire training on an old vacant house on Jason Avenue. Which can bring new housing opportunities to the lot.

The house was in an empty lot with plenty of space away from other houses in the neighborhood. The Fire Department started a fire in one room at a time for the training, and overcame different challenges throughout the day.

Chief David Gates says not only does the demolishing of the house good training for them, but it also gets the house out of there for new opportunities.

“So, we’re doing what we call learn and burn and it’s what we call an acquired structure, which is really a benefit for everyone. Somebody who either, needs an urban renewal, or just needs to dispose of the house, doesn’t want to take it to the landfill. So, we’re not going to cluster the landfill”

Chief gates says by mid afternoon Wednesday, the house was fully engulfed for training. Neighbors near by in the neighborhood were notified of their training in advance.

Neighbors in the area that stood by to watch, like Beth Lepisto says she’s glad to see this old house go.

“I like it. I want it to burn, I’m so tired of seeing this old, abandoned house here and so is everybody else,” said Lepisto.
