Local symphony receives Governor’s Award
A local musical group is getting some recognition from the governor.
The Idaho State Civic Symphony received an award for excellence in the arts from Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter. The award was given as part of the 2016 Governor’s Awards in the Arts program.
The symphony is one of only four recipients in the state to get an Excellence in the Arts Award. The governor selected the winners based on nominations from the public. The goal of the award is to recognize individuals or groups for their outstanding contribution to the arts.
The symphony currently has about 70 members. They perform a variety of music, including classical and modern hits. The symphony’s conductor, Grant Harville, said the award is a real honor for the group.
“The basic goal of our organization in its simplest form is that we’re just trying to make our community a better place through sound,” Harville said. “This is something that says, ‘Okay, we’ve been doing it and now we need to find other ways to continue to do that.”
The Governor’s Awards in the Arts have been given out every two years since the program began in 1970.
The awards ceremony will be held Nov. 10 at the state capitol.
