Update: Box Canyon fire contained at 27 acres

Update 07/28/2016 4:45 pm: The Bureau of Land Management says that the Box Canyon fire was fully contained Wednesday night. The fire burned a total of 27 acres of BLM land. The increase in size is due to more accurate mapping of the fire damage.

Investigators believe the fire was started by sparks from a blown out tire. Crews will remain at the site of the fire through Thursday evening to watch for hotspots/

Update 5:55 pm: The Bureau of Land Management says that the Box Canyon fire burning near Inkom is nearly contained. The fire has burned 21 acres. BLM officials that the fire will be fully contained by 6 p.m.

The closest buildings to the fire were about a quarter of a mile away and no evacuations were deemed necessary.

A BLM team was at the fire minutes after it was reported and soon joined by resources from the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Pocatello Valley Fire Department. Air tankers made multiple retardant drops on the fire, and a helicopter dropped water on the fire as well.
Approximately 60 total personnel have been assigned to the fire, including: 6 fire engines, 1 dozer, 1 water tender, and 1 handcrew. Resources will remain on scene throughout the evening to continue mopping up hotspots and monitoring the fire area.

Original story: A small wildfire is burning on the hills near Inkom.

The fire is located on hills just north of Blackrock Canyon Road. Crews are working to contain the fire as quickly as possible. At this time teams from Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Land Management and the Bannock County Search and Rescue team are working on the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. We have a reporter at the site and will add more details as we get them.
