Fort Hall signage at City Creek trailhead vandalized
Signs meant to symbolize the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are good stewards of the land have been ripped and tossed to the side.
The signs, which reads ‘Property of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes,’ were posted in several spots of the City Creek trailhead area in Pocatello. According to a press release released by the tribes, the land has been owned by them for several years. It gained ownership after a railroad company stopped using the water there in a federal agreement dating back to 1888.
The tribes said the signage was only meant to be a symbol of the tribes’ effort to continuously use the land responsibly, not to limit access to the area.
The Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Justice are investigating the signs’ vandalism.
The City Creek trail system map was also knocked down.
