High water closes Jefferson County roads

UPDATE: 3:10 P.M. High water has washed out the approaches to a concrete bridge in Jefferson County. The bridge crosses a canal on 2400 East, just south of 200 North. So far, Emergency Manager Rebecca Squires says the bridge is still standing.

ORIGINAL STORY: A number of Jefferson County roads are experiencing flooding due to high water this week and some have been closed. The County Office of Emergency Management said several have been closed due to high water. They include 100 North from 1800 East to 2000 East, 300 North from 1800 East to 2000 East, and 150 North from 2300 East to 2400 East. Additional roads have also been closed. They include 600 North from 2450 East to 2300 East, 400 North from 2400 East to 1800 East, 2300 East from County Line fo 400 North, 2100 East from County Line to 400 North, 2600East from 200 North to 400 North, and 1800 East from 400 North to 1200 North. Drivers are advised to use extreme caution when encountering water on the road, particularly in the Roberts area. Road crews report that in many cases, the road surfaces have been compromised and extremely hazardous. If you cannot see the surface of the road, do not drive on it. Jefferson County road crews worked through the weekend to clear culverts and break up ice jams. Updates are being provided by Jefferson County’s public awareness warning system, “Alert Sense”.
