Wyoming Senate defeats campus-carry bill

The Wyoming Senate has defeated a bill that would have allowed students and other people who aren’t police to carry guns on college campuses, including athletic events.

The Senate didn’t debate the bill before Thursday’s 17-13 vote.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports the bill’s opponents included University of Wyoming President Laurie Nichols and the presidents of six community colleges.

Proponents said allowing more armed people on campus would improve security.

Proposals to loosen gun restrictions in recent years have generally received support in the House but not in the Senate.
