Franklin County added to State Disaster Declaration
Franklin County has joined several Idaho Counties on a State Disaster Declaration because of active flooding from rapid snowmelt.
Active flooding caused by rapid snowmelt continues today throughout parts of the state and agriculture infrastructure, residences and roads have all sustained significant damage. A State Disaster Declaration ensures that all necessary state resources are made available for recovery efforts.
High water can cause significant hazards. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult and twelve inches of rushing water can carry away a small car. It is never safe to drive or walk into flood waters. Remember the phrase “Turn Around Don’t Drown”.
In addition to the flooding dangers, residents with wells and septic tanks are encouraged to err on the side of caution. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality provides useful safety guidelines on how to protect your drinking water at https://www.deq.idaho.gov
The Idaho Emergency Operations Center (IDEOC) remains activated at Heightened Awareness due to widespread winter flooding. The IDEOC is poised to elevate to Level I or higher based on weather conditions that can change quickly.
