Mom warns others after daughter gets second degree burns from playground equipment

Stephanie Luker and her daughter Ariadne, were just trying to enjoy the nice weather on Thursday by heading to Alameda Park. However, Luker’s daughter left the park that day with second degree burns.

Luker said her daughter was playing on the plastic slide when she started complaining about her hand. Luker said Ariadne’s hand was red, so she decided to take her daughter home. When Luker started to clean her daughters hand off at home, that is when she saw the blisters.

“I was wiping her hand off to look at it and cleaning it off and saw that it has blistered up a little bit on her fingers. So I called the doctor and waited for a call back. And then found out it was second degree burns” said Luker. Luker said she knew that metal slides could cause burns, but did not expect the plastic to heat up so much.

However, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, plastic slides can cause burns too. While Southeastern Idaho has been seeing temperatures in the high 80’s and 90’s, the CPSC said thermal burns can happen on cooler days too.

On their website, the CPSC said one incident was reported on a day when it was only 74 degrees out.

They also mentioned that children under the age of two burn easier.

Luker said, she wants to warn other parents about the dangers of hot playground equipment.

“I just wanted to let people know, even on the plastic slides your kids can get burned,” commented Luker.
