Republican governor candidates come together for panel discussion

All three of the 2018 Republican gubernatorial candidates running for governor faced off at a panel discussion today.

The panel discussion, hosted by the City Club of Idaho Falls, brought the three Republican governor candidates together. They discussed topics ranging from healthcare…

“First, let’s medically reform, which includes personal accountability,” Tommy Ahlquist, governor candidate, said. “There’s gotta be accountability at the Medicaid level. I’ve seen fraud, waste and abuse for 20 years in my life. Secondly, we have got to have transparency on costs, in two minutes I can’t go into that, but it’s possible, it’s out there now and we’re gonna do it. And then lastly, insurance companies have to be part of the solution.”

To education.

“We cannot let up on that commitment we made to the education community,” Lt. Gov. Brad Little, governor candidate, said. “The school boards, the teachers, on increasing starting teacher pay and putting more money into the grid so that we can be competitive. So with those professionals that are with our kids in the classroom are compensated for the great work they do.”

To diversity.

“What we have is two extreme sides from the right and the left that they’re both trying to divide this country,” Rep. Raul Labrador, governor candidate, said. “And they’re both trying to judge people based on their ethnicity, they’re trying to judge people on their race, on their class and status. We need to stop that. We actually need to have a leader in Idaho that will stand up for every Idahoan, will treat every Idahoan the same and will be able to give an impassioned and defend the values that we have here in Idaho.”

Each of the candidates also laid out their platforms for what areas they will tackle if they are elected.

“It’s education,” Ahlquist said. “Are kids ready for the jobs here, how do we keep them here. It’s the economy, how do we create high paying jobs and it’s healthcare. Everywhere I go those three issues, that’s what we’ll spend all our time working on.”

“A, you gotta have a great education system,” Little, said. “We got to continue to work and support K-12. We’ve gotta have more career technical opportunities.”

“We have to make sure that Idaho is brighter,” Labrador, said. “I wanna make sure that Idaho is the kind of place that every individual has the ability to grow, to thrive and to survive.”
