Pocatello school board reviewing “school of choice”

A Pocatello-Chubbuck school district committee has made an initial recommendation that all secondary school students attend schools based on the boundary within which they live.

The District 25 school board created a Boundary Committee to review high school and middle school boundaries and make recommendations to the full Board of Trustees. Once the committee finishes its work the board will hold public meetings before making a final decision.

According to the district, the goal of the committee is to evaluate and redistribute the high school and middle school boundaries based on each school’s capacity with consideration of future growth, movement of families to growth areas within the District, socioeconomic balance and consideration of School of Choice verses Boundary Schools.

The committee has recommended revision of high school boundaries and is now considering proposals to redraw middle school boundaries.

The committee wants to complete its work by the end of the year, then take its final recommendations to the school board in January.

Proposed high school boundaries should be available here by the end of the week.
