Girls can be Cub Scouts, too!

For the first time in the Cub Scouts’ 88 years, girls are now in the ranks. Boy Scouts of America announced the change to include girls in Cub Scouts a couple months ago.

Nine-year-old Journey Branson and seven-year-old Ema Bays are the first girls ever to enter into pack-6 in Idaho Falls.

“We chose Cub Scouts because her cousin, my little nephew, was already part of Cub Scouts. He started out as a little Lion. And she was watching him bring home all these projects and all this fun stuff, and she would go to a pack meeting and she would see how much fun they were having and she just wanted to do it so badly,” said Heather Branson, Journey’s mom.

Ema’s older brother is also in scouts. Tagging along and seeing how fun it was , the girls couldn’t wait to be apart of the action when they got the news they could officially become Cubs.

“Awesome, and that I don’t have to be left out on everything!” said Ema.

“[She’s] just elated. This is a dream come true. We prayed about this. We never thought that this was actually a possibility. As it turns out families have been wanting to put their girls into scouting for decades,” said Sam Bays, Ema’s dad and the Pack #6 Cub Master.

Venture Scouting is available for girls, but at the teenage level. So being able to join this young, Journey is having a blast.

“I like playing games,” said Journey.

“She was over the moon. She was so excited. She jumped up and down. We called Grandma and Grandpa. She was thrilled. And I was thrilled for her because Scouts has been a part of my family since I’ve been born. Its kind of a culmination of my whole life and I get to watch my daughter be a part of it,” said Heather Branson.

With Journey and Ema’s newfound friendship, they can’t wait to become Eagle Scouts.

“One thing I’ve learned about scouting is, its a game but is a game with a purpose. Its more than just like a sport, the kids are learning character traits that are kind of synergistic with what you teach them at home,” said Sam Bays.

Branson also mentioned how much journey has blossomed since joining cub scouts. A little girl who rarely participated in school, is opening up and shining in scouts.
