Star Wars ‘fight club’ is becoming a sport
“Star Wars” is more popular than ever, and some fans are just not content by merely watching light saber battles; they’re turning it into an actual sport.
The inventors call their group “The Saber Legion” and they have already been featured on ESPN.
Their tournaments started in a small, Minnesota backyard, but now reach across the globe.
Contestants come from all walks of life, but with one similarity – a love for “Star Wars.”
“I really think we live in the golden age of nerds,” fighter Charley Cummings said. “You used to be able to say you’ve seen ‘Star Wars’, but now you can proclaim it. It’s a lifestyle for people.”
The sabers are made out of the same material as police batons, forcing members to pad-up for protection.
They now have more than 30 charters and more than six thousand members.
