Researchers pin down Steamboat eruption
Scientists have reviewed seismic and temperature data from sensors in the Norris Geyser Basin. Based on that review, they now believe the Steamboat Geyser erupted at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, March 15.
Since most park roads were closed for spring plowing, no one witnessed the eruption. But, park employees reported seeing a significant steam plume late on the 15th.
Eruptions of Steamboat cannot be predicted. The last known eruption was in September of 2014.
Steamboat is the largest active geyser in the world. When it does erupt, it reaches heights up to 380 feet. That is roughly three times the size of Old Faithful.
