Ammon man arrested on multiple warrants
A canine officer helped Bonneville County deputies arrest a suspect who holed up in an Ammon attic Monday.
Matthew Lee Phillips, 26, was arrested on multiple charges.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said it received information that Phillips was inside a residence in the 1500 block of Falcon Drive with members of his family. They were told his family members were possibly being held by Phillips or were too afraid to leave.
Phillips was wanted on multiple warrants in Idaho Falls, Bonneville and Bingham Counties. He had run away from police on several other occasions. A vehicle Phillips abandoned last Saturday was found parked at the Falcon address.
No one would answer the door, so deputies continued to watch the home and suspect vehicle. Another man and woman arrived in a separate vehicle. They were identified as Shayla Dawn Waddle, 31, of Terreton and Bobby James Hainsworth, 35, of Idaho Falls.
Deputies determined Waddle and Hainsworth were attempting to make contact with Phillips, possibly to purchase heroin.
In their car, authorities found drug paraphernalia and packaging along with approximately 18 grams of methamphetamine.
Hainsworth was arrested on an outstanding Idaho Falls Police Department warrant. Waddle was taken into custody for felony possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Based on information from those suspects, deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence. At approximately 2 a.m. deputies and SWAT team members gained access and secured 3 adults and 2 juvenile family members. Phillips was attempting to hid inside a small space of the attic.
When Phillips refused to come out, a K-9 was deployed. Phillips fought with the dog and moved deeper into the attic. Deputies finally broke through the ceiling underneath Phillips. He fell down onto a mattress and was taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers.
Deputies located drug paraphernalia and a small amount of suspected heroin.
Phillips was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for treatment of dog bites and later released to the Bonneville County jail.
Phillips was arrested on a Bingham County warrant for failure to appear, an Idaho Falls warrant for petit theft, an Idaho State Police warrant for felony eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, and providing false information to an officer. He was also arrested on Bonneville County warrants for felony failure to comply with pre-trial services, felony probation violation, and misdemeanor probation violations. He will face new charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor resisting and onbstructing arrest.
None of the family members, the officers involved, or the K-9 were injured.
