Idaho Cleanup Project seeks public input

The Idaho Cleanup Project Citizens Advisory Board will accept public comment on a proposal to expand the project’s mission in Idaho.

The Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project was designed to treat, characterize, package and ship transuranic and mixed low-level waste that has been stored in Idaho since the 1970’s. The plant is expected to complete treatment of Idaho waste by the end of this year.

Now, the Department of Energy is considering an extension of the Treatment Facility’s mission to accommodate waste from other DOE sites.

If not, the Cleanup Project estimates the 300-400 person work force could be lost through lay-offs.

If the project were to be extended it would require settlement of several issues in the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement, including details concerning the amounts and types of waste that could be processed at the facility.

The Citizens Advisory Board will meet via conference call beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28 to consider which of three letters it should send to to the Department of Energy regarding the project’s future.

You can see the proposals here.
