Ninth grader organizing special needs prom
A night under the moonlight will set the stage for Bonneville High School’s special needs prom–which will be held at the Pinecrest Event Center on May 5. This event has drawn in hundreds of students and Idahoans across the state over the years.
At Bonneville High School, students have a soft spot for those with special needs, and one of the many ways they show kindness and love is by holding a prom night dedicated just to them. Freshman, Chandler Dye, who is also a special needs aid, is organizing this year’s event.
“I love working with kids, everyday I come here, and they’re not my friends anymore, they’re family. And they love to dance. I went to one of the Valentine’s dances, and they just love to do it. So i was like, I should throw a prom for them. And it started just here at Bonneville, and it spread to all over, to Journey’s, to Developmental Workshop, we’re getting all of these people that love to dance,” said Dye.
And those students couldn’t be more excited.
“I would like to do this every year, so they look forward to something every year,” Dye continued.
“A lot of our teachers and our staff around here talk about these kids–they don’t have disabilities, they have different abilities. And so to give them an experience of a lifetime for some of them, that can’t attend, or won’t attend if they move to a different school. And so we have really worked hard to encourage our students to participate, and make this a good event for everybody involved,” said Assistant Principal, Benjamin Parker.
Most of the supplies, food, and equipment have been donated by local businesses. Dye has almost reached his four hundred and fifty dollar goal, but he says an increase may make it even more special.
