New nuclear industry set to make great economic impact

Big things are coming to our area that could positively impact not only our region but the nation. A new advanced NuScale Power reactor is being tested near the Idaho National Laboratory site. The experts say this will bring thousands of jobs and have a great economic impact.

The NuScale reactor being built near the INL site is supposed to bring thousands of jobs.

“We have an opportunity for over 360 jobs long-term at the plant. As well as a very vibrant chain that can provide over 12,000 jobs across the US but really the first start will be here in Idaho and that all comes down to if the first project is done in here everything else will grow up around it,” says Christopher Colbert, Chief Strategy Officer for NuScale Power.

Which will do wonders for the regional economy.

“Brings thousands of jobs during the construction phase, hundreds of jobs permanently after it’s operating, so it will be a big deal. Not to mention the dollars that will be infused back into our local economy,” says Dana Kirkham, Director of Science, Technology and Research at Regional Economic Development Eastern Idaho (REDI).

And the INL is no stranger to this kind of business, so they’re hoping to get more companies involved.

“With having built 52 reactors in the past and four currently operating today. We’re working with these companies that have advanced designs from all across the nation to say Idaho is important the INL is important and we can help you be successful in this industry,” says Stephanie Cook, Program Manager, Technology Based Economic Development, INL

And the state is in full support.

“The governor established through an executive order the leadership in nuclear commission, also known as the line commission in 2012. And the line commissions goal is to support the lab and to support the advancement of nuclear energy and that just does that. This is allowing the state to support a project that we have roots in. We have this treasure and we’re primed for this project and we’re really excited about it,” says Bobbi-Jo Meuleman, Director, Idaho Department of Commerce.

The second part of the”Ready4Nuclear” workshop will be held tomorrow. The workshop is for nuclear suppliers from across the nation and parts of Canada.
