Injured hiker rescued at Hell’s Half-Acre

Using GPS coordinates, 24 members of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue rescued an injured hiker Tuesday night.

The team was called to Hell’s Half-Acre west of Idaho Falls by a female hiker at 9:41 p.m. She had fallen into a crevasse and was injured.

The hiker called 9-1-1, which used the phone’s coordinates to dispatch help. A Life Flight helicopter landed nearby but found the terrain too difficult to move her out of the area.

The search team left the trailhead about 10:15 p.m. and hiked about two-and-a-half miles to her position, then carried her another half-mile to the helicopter.

The woman, who was not identified, was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
