Idaho Fall School District 91 bond fails

UPDATE: 8/29

Idaho Falls School District 91 says it plans to take some time to consider what’s next after last night’s bond election.

“After the last election, the board spent more than six months going out and getting input and feedback from patrons and really use that to shape the proposal on the ballot this month,” said Margaret Wimborne with D91. “So I think they’re going to take some time and kind of look at things and have some conversations before they make any decisions on the next steps.”

ORIGINAL STORY

The Idaho Fall School District 91 $99.5 million bond failed Tuesday night.

The bond had two questions. The first was to build a new Idaho Falls High School, renovate Skyline High School and turn the current Idaho Falls High School into a career technical school. The question received 58.4 percent of the vote, but needed 66.67 percent to pass.

The second question would have created a new performing arts center at Skyline High School, a new gym and fine arts center. That question received 56.8 percent of the vote and could only pass if the first question passed.

The D91 Taxpayers group, which was against the bond, issued the following statement:

“Tonight is a victory for families, small businesses, working poor, and those on fixed incomes that can not afford an expensive new tax. While we are pleased that enough of our supporters came out on this single-ballot election night to defeat this expensive and wasteful bond, our work is not over. We once again ask the district leadership to step back from the no-bid route and explore all the options available. We ask that the community be allowed to give input at work sessions and that we work together on this. The time of dissenting patrons being shut out of the process needs to end. The taxpayers don’t want a wasteful proposal and we entreat the board for the opportunity to be a part of coming up with a plan that the community can easily support. Thanks to all patrons who were part of the democratic process today. Now let’s move forward to a brighter future!”

Idaho Falls School District 91 has been contacted, but no response has been given at this time.
