Marten Creek Fire grows to 5,919 acres

UPDATE 9/21/18 T he human-caused Marten Creek Fire has grown to 5,919 acres and is two percent contained.

Firefighters focused aerial attack resources on both the south and east sides of the fire, to reduce fire intensity and slow the rate of spread Thursday.

The western side of the fire continued backing slowly to the Greys River Road, where firefighters have been removing fuels to create a containment line. A firefighter crew was airlifted into position on the east of the fire.

Be aware that air quality can change due to fire activity and wind direction.

Officials ask you plan accordingly if you or your family are smoke sensitive.

UPDATE 9/20 4:20 p.m. T he Marten Creek fire was estimated at 4,842 acres Thursday.

The human-caused fire is burning in timber land about 13 miles east of Afton, Wyoming on the Greys River Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

It is 0 percent contained. UPDATE; 9-19 3:40 P.M.

The Marten Creek fire was estimated at 5,920 acres Wednesday. The human-caused fire is burning in timber land about 13 miles east of Afton, Wyoming on the Greys River Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Campers are being evacuated from the area as a unified firefighting command is unified. The Western Wyoming Type III Team 2 has taken command of the fire. There were 51 personnel assigned to the fire.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Bridger-Teton National Forest has issued an emergency area closure for the Marten Creek Fire burning in the Marten Creek drainage off the Greys River Road.

The closure states,The western boundary of the closure is approximately three miles west of the Greys River Road, beginning at the intersection of the McDougal Gap Road (10125) extending south to the beginning of the Spring Creek Road (10242). The Northern limit follows the McDougal Gap Road until it intersects the 10342A road at Foster Meadows. The 10342A and 10046 roads provide the eastern edge extending almost to the Middle Piney Summer Homes. The southern boundary of the closure begins approximately three miles west of the Greys river road and Spring Creek drainage and extends east following the 060 and 061 trails.”

You can view the closure map below.Red flag fire warnings, including high winds, aligned with the local topography have significantly increased fire behavior over the last two days. The fire is estimated to be approximately 5,700 acres.

The primary objective for the incident is public and firefighter safety.

The Marten Creek Fire was human-caused and is currently under investigation.

Fire danger on the Bridger Teton National Forest is very high.
