Shooting investigation protocol explained
Bannock County Prosecutor Stephen Herzog says the Bingham and Power County Sheriff’s Offices and the Pocatello and Chubbuck Police Departments are jointly investigating an officer-involved shooting incident.
The Power County Sheriff is leading the investigation and Power County Prosecutor Anson Call will review the results. The Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office will determine what, if any, charges will be filed against the juvenile.
The investigation process will follow established procedure in cases involving officers discharging their weapons. Agencies outside the officer’s agency conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Results of the investigation are turned over to a prosecutor from another jurisdiction to make a determination as to whether the officer’s conduct was lawful or not lawful.
In his first official report of the incident, Herzog said an officer with the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The incident happened at 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of Syphon Road and Whitaker Street.
A juvenile occupant of the vehicle ran away from the scene. Officers pursued him into the brush along the side of the road. According to Herzog, the occupant resisted officers and was shot.
Herzog said no further comment would be released until the investigation is complete.
