New scam targets western Wyoming

If you’re asked to use a “Google Play Card” to pay off a government debt, don’t buy it.

That’s the advice from the Teton County, Wyoming Sheriff’s Office. The office warned Tuesday that there has been a wave of scam phone calls in the area.

In them, the caller threatens action by the IRS or Jury Duty Warrants. In the latest incarnation of scams, the caller asks you to buy Google Play Cards to settle the warrant, bail money, debts, cars, or unpaid taxes.

The Sheriff’s Office advises that those cards can only be used to make purchases for things like apps and music on Google Play and adds, “no government agency anywhere will ask you to buy Google Play Cards to settle a warrant or unpaid taxes.”
