City of Pocatello hosting flood risk meeting

The City of Pocatello is hosting a flood risk impact open house, Monday from 4 to 6 p.m in the City Council Chambers.

Showcasing the city’s plans for reducing flood risks, the meeting will also provide tips for protecting your family, home and business from flood dangers.

New FEMA maps, indicating areas at risk of flooding, will be used to help determine the prices of flood insurance.

According to the Pocatello Public Works Project Manager, Maggie Clark, “these updated flood plain areas are being targeted because the maps we currently have no longer accurately represent the one percent risk.”

“What that means is there is one percent chance every year of a 100-year flood event occurring. So these properties, your flood insurance and things like that, those types of things are what’s going to need to be updated with these changes,” Clark explained.

There is a 90-day comment and appeal period.
