Suspicious letters discovered at Senator Risch’s office

Pocatello fire crews and HAZMAT team checked out a suspicious letter that was sent to several offices of Senator Jim Risch this morning. The letters were sent by mail to several of the senator’s offices located in Boise, Twin Falls, and the second floor of Omni Building in Pocatello.

Hazmat crews inspected the building and have determined that there was no threat to the public. Travis Smith, Assistant Chief of the Pocatello Fire Department said they worked with federal authorities throughout the investigation.

“Idaho offices of emergency management in partnership with federal cooperators came up with a game plan to clear and ensure that the suspicious mailings were not a threat to each community,” Smith said.

The FBI was called and they are currently investigating the situation. There is still no word on who sent the letters. The Senator’s staff says this is the first time this has happened.
