Protect your furry friends on Independence Day
The Fourth of July is typically a joyous day for Americans, but for our pets, it can be a stressful one.
Pocatello Animal Services is encouraging you to protect your pets this Independence Day and take extra precaution as the fireworks are being discharged.
“Fireworks are loud and may be scary to some animals. This can cause stress and panic in the animals, resulting in the animal trying to escape their own residence,” said Josh Heinz, Shelter Supervisor. “When this happens, it may result in the pet running away and/or possible injuries.”
Animal Services staff recommend the following steps to protect your pets:
Make sure the animal is wearing proper identification. This includes a collar with a current City tag. Microchipping is another good way to protect your pet. Don’t leave pets outside to wait for you to return home. Dogs left in backyards often get frightened by fireworks and will climb or jump the tallest of fences. Dogs left on chains can snap the chain or injure themselves trying to get away. Don’t take pets with you to a fireworks display, because they don’t know it’s a celebration. Secure pets in the house for the night with someone to watch them. Make sure someone stays with pets if you know fireworks or loud noises upset your pets. Scared dogs have been known to go through closed windows to escape. If you wish to tranquilize your pet, consult your veterinarian.
If you lose a pet or find a pet during the holiday, contact Animal Services immediately. While the shelter will be closed Thursday, July 4, an Animal Services Officer will be available by calling Police Dispatch at 208-234-6100 (select option #1). The shelter will be open Friday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
