Evacuation lifted, residents may return home

UPDATE 12:46 p.m.: The Rexburg Police Department says residents may now return to their homes. Yale and Harvard Avenues are open to vehicle traffic.

The affected area on 3rd East St. is open to pedestrian traffic only at this time due to the heavy equipment that is still working.

Residents on 3rd East St. will not have gas service for a while longer.

When service is restored, gas company employees will go door to door to assist customers to re-ignite their pilot lights.

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: The Rexburg Police Department says it is expected to take several hours before the situation is resolved and residents can return to their homes.

An emergency shelter has been set up at the Madison Fire Deptarement training room at 26 N Center St. Officials ask you park across the street in the Rexburg Tabernacle parking lot.

The Madison County Fire Department estimates the duration of the close of the incident will be 4 p.m.

The Rexburg Police Department reports an evacuation is in place due to a gas leak and fire.

Residents of Yale and Harvard Avenues and the 300 – 400 block of South 3rd East Streets are being evacuated.

The evacuation will be in place until the fire department can determine the source of the leak and be sure any potential danger has passed.
