Grizzly documentary premieres Thursday

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - A new grizzly documentary will debut in Idaho Falls on Thursday. 

"For those who come to visit the Greater Yellowstone area, part of the allure is the complete wildness of it." 

“On Grizzly Ground” is the latest film from local outdoor journalist Kris Millgate. 

She spent the summer of 2022 following grizzly bears through the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. 

The new film showcases perspectives from tribes, tourists, scientists, and activists as they consider the future of the federally protected animals. 

"You have to respect their space,” said Millgate.  “You carry bear spray, you clean up garbage, lock your cooler. All those things have to happen to try to give everybody their space. And when I say everybody, I include the wildlife in that because the reality is those bears are expanding in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. And here we are, and so, we have to figure out how to manage with them here. And that means we have to change because the bears have figured out how to live among us. Now we have to figure out how to live among them."

'On Grizzly Ground' is the second documentary produced by Millgate.  She also followed migrating salmon with her film titled 'Ocean to Idaho.'

Millgate has also published her third book, titled “My Place Among Beasts.”  It is the backstory of what she endured during the grizzly expedition.
