Pocatello limits residents to two yard sales per year

CITY OF POCATELLO

UPDATE:

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) — Pocatello residents are limited to two yard sales per year under city code, and the city is reminding people of the rules as summer yard sale season begins.

The reminder comes as Idaho's tax rules also limit how many yard sales a person can hold while qualifying for the state's occasional sales exemption.

According to the Idaho State Tax Commission, yard sales and garage sales are typically considered short-term events where people sell their own items at their own residence. Residents cannot hold more than two yard sales in a calendar year and still qualify for the occasional sales exemption.

The tax commission notes that holding a yard sale with a family member, friend or neighbor counts as a sale for each person involved.

Under Pocatello city code, residents may hold one yard sale between Jan. 1 and June 30 and another between July 1 and Dec. 31.

The city also requires yard sale signs to include the dates of the sale and be removed within 48 hours after the sale ends.

Officials say the rules are intended to reduce clutter in neighborhoods while allowing residents to periodically sell unwanted household items.

More information about city code requirements is available through the City of Pocatello and the Idaho State Tax Commission.
