Idaho Falls Animal Shelter sees recent spike in canine parvovirus
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – The Idaho Falls Animal Shelter is dealing with seven puppies who have caught the parvovirus. It is a contagious virus that affects an animal's intestines, and if not treated in time, can lead to death.
The IFAS first got a litter of four Border Collie puppies who contracted the illness. They were taken to the Idaho Falls Veterinary Hospital to be treated. These puppies are on the mend and should be available for adoption soon.
After helping those four puppies get well, the shelter came across three more puppies with parvovirus. Once again, IFVH took them in. Two of the puppies are doing well, but one is still hospitalized under inpatient care. They do not know if it will make it but are remaining hopeful.
The IFAS and IFVH want to remind pet owners, especially those with puppies, to get your animals vaccinated. It is the best way to ensure pets have a safe and healthy life.
Vaccines for the parvovirus can range from $20-$100 depending on your vet clinic. Treating a parvovirus infection can cost thousands of dollars.
The IFAS is accepting monetary donations to help continue to care for these sick puppies. To donate, you can text IFAS to 89871, call for an over-the-phone donation, drop it off or mail donations to 2450 Hemmert Ave in Idaho Falls.
