Boil order finally lifted in Island Park subdivisions

ISLAND PARK, Idaho (KIFI) - A boil order that was in effect for several months has finally been lifted in two Island Park subdivisions.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality lifted the boil water advisories for the Shotgun North and Shotgun South Stevens Lane subdivisions.

The advisories have been in place since May 5, 2023, due to the presence of E. coli bacteria in the systems.

Water samples taken in October and November 2023 and the last ten sample results have come back absent of total coliform.

Big Springs Water Company is currently responsible for managing the water system. Island Park Water Company managed the system until a civil complaint by the DEQ was filed against the water company for failing to correct a number of deficiencies.

DEQ reported that Big Springs Water completed the following system repairs.

  • Installing adequate backflow prevention
  • Repairing leaking main lines
  • Protecting the pump houses from unauthorized entry
  • Maintaining a minimum system pressure of 40 pounds per square inch during maximum hourly demand conditions
  • Installing adequate heating in the pump houses
  • Implementing an extensive flushing program
  • Collecting compliance samples representing the entire distribution system within each subdivision

According to the DEQ, Big Springs Water will manage the day-to-day operation of seven water systems in Island Park area. The company will also work to transfer ownership of the water system to a entity for long-term operations.
