Slovakia’s first female president won’t seek reelection next year

KIFI

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Slovakia’s president says she will not seek re-election in next year’s presidential vote. Zuzana Čaputová says the announcement was one of the “toughest” she has made. She said Tuesday that she came to the coclusoin that she wouldn’t have enough strength left for another five-year term. Čaputová has been a clear pro-Western voice in Slovakia’s politics and a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion. She has visited Ukraine twice since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Čaputová was elected to the largely ceremonial post in 2019.
