Sen. Bob Menendez’s lawyer cites patriotism as a reason to acquit his client

NEW YORK (AP) — A defense lawyer for Sen. Bob Menendez says acquitting the Democrat would be the patriotic thing to do. Attorney Adam Fee told jurors Wednesday in a closing argument that it would be a “win” for the country if it acquits Menendez of bribery charges. As he left the courthouse, Menendez told reporters that Fee’s arguments had “stripped away the government’s false narratives and exposed their lies.” Menendez and two New Jersey businessmen have pleaded not guilty. The jury will likely get to begin deliberations Thursday afternoon after closing arguments conclude and the judge delivers instructions on the law.
