Hot and windy for Tuesday; Red Flag Warning posted

As a front drives out of Montana for Tuesday, we’ll look for dry and windy conditions. High temperatures will rise to the upper 80’s and lower 90’s for the Snake River Plain. Overnight for Monday night, look for light winds around 5-10 mph, with an low temperature around 50°. Heading into Tuesday morning, winds will steadily increase throughout the day. High temperatures will reach around 90° for the Snake River Plain. Winds will be out of the southwest around 5 to 15 mph increasing to 20 to 30 mph. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Blowing afternoon dust will also be an issue with this dry forecast. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory and a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday.

WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM TO 9 PM MDT TUESDAY…

  • WHAT…West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • WHERE…Eastern Magic Valley, Shoshone/Lava Beds, Arco/Mud Lake Desert, Lower Snake River Plain, and Upper Snake River Plain.
  • WHEN…From 1 PM to 9 PM MDT Tuesday.
  • IMPACTS…Gusty winds could make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Unsecured objects may be blown around. Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.

RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 9 PM MDT TUESDAY FOR GUSTY WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY :

The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low relative humidity, which is in effect from noon to 9 PM MDT Tuesday.

  • WINDS…West 20 to 30 mph with gusts 35 to 40 mph.
  • RELATIVE HUMIDITY…As low as 13 percent.
  • IMPACTS… A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly based on these criteria for Southeastern Idaho:

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly based on these criteria for Southeastern Idaho:

  • Relative humidity at or below 15 percent and wind gusts of at least 25 mph in the mountains, or 30 mph in the Snake Plain.
  • Thunderstorm coverage of 25 percent, without specific rainfall criteria.
  • Other high impact events deemed critical by the National Weather Service and area fire management agencies.
