Prescription fire planned near Challis
People who live in the Challis area may see some smoke this week as the Salmon-Challis National Forest begins prescription fires on 50 to 150 acres of timber and sage brush land on the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District.
Depending on weather conditions, the activity may take place on Wednesday and Thursday in the Grouse Peak area, about 7 miles east of Challis. A number of fire management crews will be on the scene during ignition and post ignition to monitor and manage fire activity.
Forest officials said residual fire activity, including smoke, may be visible for several weeks.
The purpose of the fire is to maintain stand conditions and enhance habitat for wildlife, including Sage grouse. It should also lessen the risk of high intensity fire near the Grouse Peak communication site.
