Simplot games bring more to Pocatello than just athletes
POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - Competition is heating up for the 42nd annual Simplot Games in Pocatello. Students from more than 20 states and at least three countries will be competing in this year’s event.
According to Simplot Games organizers, more than 2,000 student-athletes and their families will compete in Holt Arena and stay somewhere in Pocatello. In a survey taken 15 years ago, the city estimated a $3.6 million economic impact on the community. This year, they expect that number to be much higher.
Rick Philips, a coordinator for the event, says there is a lot that goes into preparation but the payoff is worth it, especially for the community. “Hospitality is a big benefactor for the simplot games.”
Pocatello/Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, Matt Hunter, says the Simplot Games is his favorite community event all year. “It’s a lot of people,” Hunter said. “Most of the hotels are full. The restaurants are busy all week. It definitely has a big impact on our town for a few weeks.”
Track and field events will go through February 15 and there is no admission fee.
