Warm weather stays in eastern Idaho until Sunday evening storms

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Warm and mostly dry weather will continue across eastern Idaho through Sunday afternoon, with temperatures reaching the lower 80s in the lower Snake Plain and Magic Valley. Rain and thunderstorm chances are expected to hold off until late Sunday evening and overnight, keeping the vast majority of Sunday daylight hours clear.

According to the National Weather Service, low-level southerly winds will maintain warm valley temperatures before an upper-level low-pressure system approaches the region. Forecasted storm-total rainfall has trended lower, with expected totals between 0.10 and 0.30 inches arriving late Sunday night into Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase late Sunday night into early Monday morning, with precipitation chances peaking overnight. Cloud cover and morning rain on Labor Day will clear from west to east by early-to-mid afternoon, leaving the remainder of the holiday dry for outdoor plans. Temperatures on Labor Day will be noticeably cooler, with highs ranging from the 60s to lower 70s alongside breezy winds gusting up to 34 mph.

Following the cold front, post-frontal clearing on Monday night will drive overnight lows into the 30s across high country basins and the 40s on valley floors. Tuesday will remain cool, with lower-elevation highs reaching the lower-to-mid 70s under sunny skies.

Temperatures will recover back toward seasonal averages on Wednesday and Thursday, with valley highs reaching the upper 70s and lower 80s. Model guidance from the weather service indicates another system from the Pacific Northwest could approach late in the week, bringing increased cloud cover and low-end precipitation chances by Friday.
