Cold front brings windy conditions and cooler temps for Saturday

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI)- Windy conditions and cooler weather are moving across East Idaho Friday night, bringing milder temperatures heading into Saturday. Most lower-elevation areas will see daytime highs drop into the 60s on Saturday following a passing cold front.

An upper-level low pressure system centered over Washington is driving deep south-southwestern airflow across the region. As the associated frontal boundary passes through Friday night, strong winds will persist, particularly at higher elevations in the central mountains. Cooler air settling behind the front will keep temperatures near or slightly below normal through the week, though a few locations along the Utah border could still touch the 70s.

For Friday night, partly cloudy skies with a low temperature around 48 degrees. South-southwest winds between 8 and 17 mph are anticipated, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

Conditions on Saturday are forecast to be mostly sunny, with daytime temperatures reaching a high near 66 degrees. Southwest winds of nine to 16 mph will continue, with gusts as high as 28 mph before decreasing Saturday night. Skies will become mostly cloudy Saturday night with a low temperature around 47 degrees as winds settle after midnight.

While dry conditions will prevail for most of the region, moisture shifting through the area Friday night may produce light showers across parts of the Frank Church Wilderness. A brief rebound in temperatures is expected Sunday with a high near 72 degrees, though isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across the eastern and central mountains on Sunday and Monday.

Shallow high pressure is expected to remain across Idaho through most of the week, keeping overall temperatures near or slightly below normal.
