The City of Idaho Falls asks residents to check storm drains amidst continuing rain showers

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - With heavy rain still in the forecast and a flood watch in effect for Eastern Idaho through 6pm on Monday, the City of Idaho Falls is urging residents to monitor storm drains near their homes to help prevent street flooding.

Storm drains, typically metal grates along curbs and gutters, carry water away from streets. However, leaves and other debris can block the drains, preventing water from flowing properly.

According to the city, blocked storm drains can contribute to street flooding and potentially affect nearby homes.

Residents are encouraged to check storm drains near their streets and clear away debris only if they can do so safely from the sidewalk without entering traffic.

If a storm drain is blocked along a busy city street, residents should notify the city and wait for crews to clear it rather than attempting to remove the obstruction themselves.

How to report a blocked storm drain

Residents can contact the City of Idaho Falls after-hours dispatch at 208-612-8108 to report a blocked storm drain.

Callers should stay on the phone through the initial message to be directed to Public Works dispatch.

The city encourages residents to prioritize their safety while helping keep storm drains clear as wet weather moves into the area.
