Wild horses treated and released
CHALLIS, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - The Bureau of Land Management has released 52 wild horse studs and nine mares back into the Challis Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA). The horses were captured during a "wild horse gather" in early November.
The mares were treated with the fertility control vaccine Porcine Zona Pellucida.
An aerial census flight determined 115 wild horses remained at large on the range. A ratio of studs and mares will be released to reach the low end of an appropriate management level of 185 animals.
Additional mares will be released in January, following a fertility control booster vaccination.
The remainder of the wild horses removed from the range will be made available for adoption at the BLM Challis Wild Horse Off-Range Corral Facility January 31 to February 1, 2020.
