Odyssey Charter School to close
A state panel ruled Odyssey Charter School will close.
The Idaho Public Charter School Commission repealed the school’s charter Wednesday.
“This is a tragic day for our community, our families, staff, and most importantly our students,” said Odyssey Board Chairman Carrie Reynolds in a news release. “While past mistakes were made by people no longer involved with the school, we were hoping the commissioners would recognize the herculean efforts we have made in the last three months to do what was not done in the past.”
The school failed to meet an accreditation during the 2013-2014 school year, which is also the first year the school was open. It started teaching grades six through 10, and added 11th grade this school year. The school in Idaho Falls teaches about 90 students from Jefferson, Bonneville County, and Shelley school districts. It focuses on project-based learning.
The Odyssey Board of Directors will meet Thursday night to discuss the next step it should take. It could accept the commission’s decision, forcing students to find a new school, it said. Its other option is to seek an injunction to keep the school open and seek redress.
