Expect snow and subzero temps
As of Friday morning, the snow was still going strong throughout most of eastern Idaho and western Wyoming.
Most locations have already picked up 3 to 6 inches since Thursday afternoon with some areas in the Central Mountains and Eastern Highlands picking up well over a foot. Travel has been difficult, as snow is covering most of the roads and highways. The snow continues for Friday with an additional 2 to 6 inches for the Upper Snake River Plain and mountain valleys.
Winds will also begin to pick up after lunch, which means blowing snow will also be a concern as visibilities will be reduced.
Areas south of Shelley and Blackfoot toward the Utah border will have warming temperatures through the afternoon, causing the snow to change over to rain. This will cause improving roadway conditions for the short term as snow will quickly be melting.
On Friday night, however, Arctic cold will enter the region, dropping temperatures rapidly into the teens and freezing any precipitation on the roadways making for dangerous travel conditions Saturday morning.
Snow will begin to taper off by noon on Saturday, and subzero temperatures can be expected through the weekend as skies begin to clear.
