Madison High School debater and volunteer wins Distinguished Student Award

Emily Conrad is passionate about volunteering. She’s a Red Cross volunteer and spent all of last summer volunteering at an orphanage and school in Ghana.

“I’d feed them and play with them all day,” Conrad said. “That’s all you did with them — it was really fun. In the mornings I taught at a school as a Kindergarten teacher.”

Conrad said she just wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. She felt she accomplished that, but the experience also made a difference in her life.

“It’s like my Utopia — it’s the place I always want to go back to because everyone’s so happy,” Conrad said. “Even if they don’t have everything, they know they have everything they need.”

Conrad wants to major in accounting and then join Bankers Without Borders.

“They go to third world countries and help build economies, Conrad said. “It’s kind of like Doctors Without Borders. I like volunteering and service.”
