ISP wants to expand drug dog program
Drug dogs have been helping law enforcement fight drugs across the country for years. But for the Idaho State Police, they’ve only had their drug dogs for about a year now. Troopers say the program is going so well, they’d like to expand it.
ISP had the program before, but had to get rid of it due to budget cuts. They brought the dogs back because they said they realized how important they are.
ISP said when they didn’t have the dogs, they had to rely on other agencies with dogs to help during traffic stops. Since they brought the dogs back they said they can now return the favor.
The dogs can find drugs police might not see right away, and they can find them faster.
Troopers said they want to make sure they’re doing all they can to keep drugs off the street.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to intercept this criminal activity on the side of the road. Our troopers get a lot of training, spend a lot of time in the academy learning how to locate this and really with a drug dog it is one more tool that is really the icing on the cake,” said ISP Lt. Chris Weadick.
