Idaho lawmakers working on an Add The Words compromise
Some members of Idaho’s legislature are working on a compromise bill even in their off-time.
Senate Pro Tem, Brent Hill of Rexburg met with KIDK’s Todd Kunz to talk about the possibilities of an ‘Add The Words’ bill next year.
Hill says this is a very emotional and sensitive issue and he key is to find a balance of protecting anti-discrimination on one side and protecting religious rights on the other.But at the very least they are talking.
“We’re working with groups on both sides of this to try to see, ‘is there a way to come together and protect both of those interests?” says Hill. “If it falls apart, you are not going to see anything this next session. If we can get people together at least far enough that they can talk and realize, we might have to give up something, but if we get something that’s more important to us, then it’s something we can embrace. That’s what we’re trying to reach.”
Reports are that this discussion wouldn’t change the existing Idaho human rights act, but rather create a new section in another portion of Idaho law.
