Rigby City Council reviews police options

Rigby Police Chief Keith Hammon outlined three budget options for city councilmen Thursday night.

The options came in response to a proposal from Mayor Jason Richardson last month. He suggested a possible law enforcement contract with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office.

Hammon proposed budget cuts that could range anywhere from $40,000 to $80,000. Those cuts could come in conjunction with either an immediate reduction in force of two officers or a cut in staff by natural attrition.

Under terms of Hammon’s proposal, city clerk Dave Swager said the police department would maintain an annual budget of around $620,000.

The city council also reviewed the terms of a proposed contract agreement with the Sheriff’s office.

Swager said the city council will review both proposals and make a final decision at its November 5 meeting.
